Do you know your level of fluency according to official levels of language proficiency?

The challenge of determining your language proficiency is due to a lack of universal standards of measurement. In fact, several similar frameworks are currently in use.

According to Education.com, “Language proficiency is a measurement of how well an individual has mastered a language. Proficiency is measured in terms of receptive and expressive language skills, syntax, vocabulary, semantics, and other areas that demonstrate language abilities.”

Common Language Proficiency Frameworks in the U.S.

The term “levels of fluency” refers to predetermined levels of language skills that pertain to your ability to listen, speak, write, and read in a foreign language.

Your level of fluency helps potential employers assess whether you’re qualified for a specific job position, so it’s useful to include it on your resume. To assess your current skill level in a foreign language, you can take online assessments or official exams.

In the U.S., two commonly used proficiency frameworks exist:

  1. The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL)
  2. The Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) scale

The ACTFL scale consists of five fluency levels: novice, intermediate, advanced, superior, and distinguished. Each level contains three sublevels of proficiency (low, medium, and high).

The ILR scale includes the following language proficiency levels:

The levels of language proficiency detailed below come from the Interagency Language Round-table (ILR) scale, which is established by the US Foreign Service Institute.

Essentially, this level indicates no knowledge of the language. You may know a few words but can’t form sentences or engage in basic conversation. Also known as No Spanish

At this starting point of the levels of language proficiency, you can form basic sentences, including asking and answering simple questions. If you’re traveling to a new country and just beginning to study a language, this is your level. Also known as Elementary Spanish.

At this level, you can handle basic commands and limited casual conversations. If you’re at this level, you still need help with more complex conversations and can only operate independently in basic conversations. Also known as Limited Working Spanish.

Once you reach this language proficiency level, you can make contributions to meetings and hold conversations with customers or clients. You can speak at a normal speed in the language and have developed a fairly extensive vocabulary. You probably still need help to understand more subtle and nuanced phrasing. Many employers require a new hire to be at this level or above. Also known as Professional Working Spanish.

At this level, you can have advanced discussions on a wide range of topics like personal life, current events, and technical topics related to your field. You may occasionally misspeak or make minor mistakes, but your vocabulary is extensive and you can carry on conversations with ease. Also known as Full Professional Spanish.

If you’re at this language proficiency level, you were either raised speaking the language or have been speaking it so long that you’re completely fluent. Also known as Native Spanish or Bilingual English and Spanish.

Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)

Although the CEFR placement test is not well-known in the United States, it is common throughout the rest of the world. Job candidates from Latin America, Africa, and Europe typically state their language proficiency level using the CEFR categories. It is an internationally recognized way of communicating your language skills.

The six levels in this system ranges from A1 to C2. Most online Spanish language courses aim to get you to the same level in all areas, but don’t be surprised if your skill level varies across language acquisition areas. You may be at an A2 level for speaking, but a B1 level for reading.

See also: 10 Effective Habits for All Levels to Learn Spanish and Speak It Fluently

At these levels, you are considered to be a basic user. As an A1 user, you can understand slow, articulated speech and ask simple questions. At an A2 skill level, you can compose short phrases and common sentences and understand slower conversations.

In other words, A1 and A2 users are beginners. However, an A1 student is not a complete beginner. According to the standards above, a student at the A1 level already has some primary mastery of the language. So, to reach the A1 level, you need to complete an introductory Spanish course.

The B1 and B2 levels are for independent users. If you want to work abroad or travel, your goal would be the B1 level, or ideally B2.

At the B1 level, you can confidently get around Latin America or Spain on your own. While you may not understand everything, you know enough Spanish to get directions and hold basic conversations. A B2 user has more vocabulary and can work a job that requires intermediate language skills.

The C1 and C2 levels are for proficient users. If your goal is Spanish fluency, aim for a C1 level in which you can fluently speak and express yourself. A C1 level does not mean you understand every word in the language but that you can handle most conversations and some tricky topics.

The C2 level is complete mastery. Often, even native speakers do not reach this level. This level pertains mostly to college professors, language gurus, and experts in a specialized field.

Are you looking for the best online Spanish program or homeschool Spanish curriculum in the market right now?

If your answer is yes, keep reading to learn every curriculum option we have available for you at Homeschool Spanish Academy (HSA)!

Our programs have been voted “Best Overall Online Spanish Classes for Kids in 2022” and this guide will show you all the details of what we offer.

In order to give you the most in-depth insider’s view, I interviewed Rosa Menchu, our Production Manager at HSA, who has worked with us for over 10 years, and who best understands our teachers and curriculum.

What Are the Curriculum Options at Homeschool Spanish Academy?

We offer 6 curriculum options aligned with the educational system in the United States. Click any programs you’re interested in to jump to the section with more details:

  1. Preschool
  2. Elementary
  3. Middle School
  4. High School
  5. Adults
  6. Schools

Besides those programs that we’ll explore in detail in a minute, we also offer the option of working a “Free Style” type of program adapted to the needs and requirements of our customers.

There’s also a Summer Program for students interested in improving their Spanish conversation skills while they learn more about the world and its different cultures.

What Can You Expect With Each Option?

Each program adapts to your student’s level of comprehension and learning speed. In line with this, classes provide an “English support” option where the teacher will reinforce concepts in English—or avoid using English altogether, depending on your preference.

In fact, you can choose on a scale of 1 to 10 how much English you want involved in your child’s Spanish lessons!

What more can you expect?

Tests and Exams

The quizzes and exams are applied during the session with the student, while the teacher shares the screen and registers everything in a PDF file.

Materials and Resources

All the materials used are digital, the lessons come in a PDF file, and there are PowerPoint presentations, reading links, as well as online games to make the class more attractive for the students.

Adaptable Teaching Methods

HSA teachers have been trained to use a variety of teaching methods in order to adapt to the specific characteristics of every student or group.

6 Online Spanish Programs and Homeschool Curriculum

Let’s now take a closer look at each of the 6 programs aligned with the States system. Both the Free Style program and the Summer program are flexible and unique in their own way (for more information about these 2 program options please get in touch with our customer support staff at info@spanish.academy.

Preschool

The preschool program is divided into four sub-levels 1A, 1B, 2A, and 2B, and it’s suggested for children aged 5 and 6. The curriculum focuses on building a solid Spanish foundation through the study of colors, objects, greetings, numbers, and basic conversational phrases.

The classes have a duration of 25 minutes and our curriculum experts highly recommend your student take 2 sessions per week.

If that’s not your preference, we also provide 1-session or 3-session per week courses.

While the lessons are individual, there’s an option to have paired sessions too if you’d rather have both of your kids taking a class at the same time.

Preschool Program Goals: to learn the Spanish phonetics and introduce the students to basic Spanish vocabulary and common expressions.

Elementary

The elementary program is designed for students aged 6 to 10 and is centered around developing the Spanish speaking skills of every student. The materials are age appropriate for this level, consisting of more pictures than text.

As with the preschool program, classes have a length of 25 minutes and it’s recommended to take 2 lessons per week. The elementary program is aimed at students who want to achieve Spanish speaking and listening fluency.

Elementary Program Goals: students will learn the phonetics of the Spanish language, increase their vocabulary, ask questions, as well as correctly use adjectives, regular and irregular verbs.

Middle School

The middle school program is for students between 10 and 13 years old. It focuses on expanding vocabulary and applying the students’ Spanish knowledge through conversations. At this level, the students will learn to form sentences in all tenses and will be able to understand, read, write, and speak Spanish.

At this level, the session length is of 50 minutes and if the recommended frequency of 2 lessons per week is followed, the student finishes each one of the program six sub-levels in 14 classes, with 3 quizzes, and 4 exams included.

Middle School Program Goals: the students will become familiar with regular, irregular, and intransitive verbs, nouns and articles, possessive pronouns, prepositions, and idiomatic phrases. According to Rosa, “successful completion of this course will allow students to understand and utilize the nuanced usage components of the Spanish language in speech, writing, and reading.”

High School

The high school program has been designed for students from 13 to 18 years of age. It’s a more rigorous curriculum than what you can find in any public high school and it’s focused on applying the students’ Spanish knowledge through conversation.

The high school program “satisfies the high school foreign language requirement for college admissions” and allows you to earn a high school foreign language credit. Following the recommended frequency of 2 classes per week, students complete each one of the eight sub-levels of the program in 14 lessons, 3 quizzes, and 4 exams.

High School Program Goals: at the completion of this program students will achieve Spanish speaking and listening fluency. They will master complex Spanish tenses such as the future perfect, the formal imperative, and the imperfect subjunctive, as well as the direct and indirect style, and will master the Spanish accents, among many other topics.

Adults

HSA’s adults program is for students ages 19 and older. The curriculum is tailored to the student’s needs and adapted to their level. This program can also be adapted to the specific industry of students (medicine, accounting, etc.) in order to help them advance in their careers faster.

The adult Spanish program allows for the rescheduling or cancellation of a lesson if the student needs it and offers a lot of flexibility in the scheduling of recurring sessions.

Adults Program Goals: due to its flexibility, the goals of this program are the goals of the student who requires it. We can adapt it to help you prepare for a trip, learn useful vocabulary for your industry, or improve your conversation skills.

Schools

Homeschool Spanish Academy also offers its services to public, private, hybrid, or online charter schools across the US which may need Spanish support or want to completely delegate the Spanish language courses to them.

Depending on the needs of schools, HSA offers different options of group classes. In one modality, we only provide tutoring sessions. In the second option, we provide curricula plus the teachers. Finally, in the third type of arrangement, we can provide curricula plus the teachers, plus tutor sessions.

Schools Program Goals: in this case, the goals are determined by the needs and wishes of the schools hiring the services of HSA. The only goal here is to satisfy the goals and objectives of the schools.

The Significance of HSA for Spanish Language Education

Homeschool Spanish Academy is more than an academy for learning Spanish.

Over the years, the program has been updated to keep up with the necessary tools to offer Spanish language education through an online platform.

The possibility that people from all over the world with access to the internet can connect and learn a new language is fascinating!

Especially if they learn with native Spanish speakers; it’s something that globalization and the efforts of the HSA team have achieved.

Learning Spanish can be a complex and overwhelming task. However, the difference is made at HSA with processes and methodologies that put the student as the protagonist.

Experiencing the language in a real format, with an accent from a Spanish-speaking country, and people who have spoken it since birth makes learning meaningful.

The purpose is to give students a bonus. By having a positive educational experience, they’ll learn faster and have the self-confidence to launch themselves into the world of the Spanish language.

Everything is possible! And the high-quality teaching provided to students will truly impact their lives.

But the real question is, how did homeschool Spanish Academy start?

We recommend: What to Expect from a Year with Homeschool Spanish Academy

The Story of Homeschool Spanish Academy

HSA was born in a Central American country called Guatemala.

Ron Fortin, the founder and owner of the academy, moved to Antigua, Guatemala, on a mission to work as principal of a school for underprivileged children.

But before starting the journey, he realized that he had to learn Spanish to better communicate with the children and the school’s teaching and administrative team.

This is how he contacted a Spanish tutor who taught him, through Skype, the basics of Spanish with which he could survive in Guatemala.

In his two years in Antigua, Guatemala, he learned the reality of Guatemalan teachers who taught Spanish as a second language.

Most, if not all, teachers focused on teaching Spanish to tourists who visited Antigua, Guatemala, for a few weeks or months.

But as we all know, the tourist influx is generally very changing and diverse, so Spanish teachers constantly change jobs depending on the year’s season to keep a stable income.

This is how Ron thought that by targeting a new market other than tourism could be the solution to have a stable and secure job for Guatemalan teachers living in Antigua, Guatemala.

But what about the clients? The answer: people living in the United States who had access to a computer and Skype and wanted to learn Spanish online.

With that vision in mind, Homeschool Spanish Academy was inaugurated in 2011 and currently has 160 tutors who teach and help students learn Spanish. Our students come from more than 30 countries.

Accessible and Effective Spanish Education

The entire team of Homeschool Spanish Academy, based in Antigua, Guatemala, are native speakers and professionals prepared to give the most authentic learning experience.

Ron envisioned the academy as a space where bridge language and cultural bonds between students and teachers would be built through meaningful relationships and experiences.

And thus fulfilling his great mission of making Spanish learning as effective, efficient, and personable as possible.

Each Spanish teacher is strongly committed to giving homeschooling students all the instruction possible by creating a personalized program for the type of learning they require.

By working in a safe environment, with dignified treatment and multiple job benefits, teachers improve themselves and prepare their lessons with integrity, professionalism, and courage.

In return, the students who take classes at HSA are becoming fluent in Spanish, but more importantly, learning about another culture and broadening their perspectives.

The most significant thing about learning Spanish at HSA is the commitment of each tutor to providing personalized learning.

Programs can be adapted according to what families or students need based on their schedules, location, and methodology.

It’s easy to enjoy everything that Spanish classes online include. Find out how it works here.

Teaching Approach of Homeschool Spanish Academy

The unique curriculum and teaching approach in the HSA program, very different from the traditional classroom setting, will help students progress more quickly.

Students get one-on-one attention during each lesson and eventually get superior results.

They’ll feel encouraged to engage in real Spanish conversations, ask whatever questions they need, review complex topics, and get extra help where needed.

This ensures the student moves towards fluency at a faster rate than the students in a traditional classroom.

Professional tutors at the academy promote an immersive learning environment so students learn and understand Spanish faster.

They’ll receive a dedicated guide on grammar, vocabulary, idioms, and, above all, on traditions and customs in the cultural experiences of Latin America.

If students connect real experiences of Guatemalan, Colombian, Spanish, or Mexican culture with their lessons, they’ll feel closer to them and, therefore, be excited to learn more about these Spanish-speaking countries.

Homeschool Spanish Academy’s effective programs provide a standardized Spanish curriculum specially designed with the student’s age in mind.

Students will learn Spanish language concepts in each class and receive real-time feedback and support material to improve.

The interactive lessons include multimedia, quizzes, exams, online resources, downloadable assignments and material, and more!

All this is to get new skills or reinforce those you already have, such as speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

Colleen Foster

Parent of 2

I enjoyed seeing the interaction between the teacher and my daughter.

The teacher interacted well, and the session flowed nicely. There were no awkward pauses when transitioning to sharing a screen.

HSA offers a great opportunity to learn from a native Spanish speaker, at a very reasonable price.

Tera Naset

Parent of 2

It’s so logistically easy, not having to take my daughter anywhere. And she really likes her teacher.

Plus, to her, it’s a version of screen time, which she doesn’t get a lot of and is always very excited about.

Myrl Eddy

Taking Spanish for personal purpose

My favorite part about the classes is the one-on-one conversation with teacher.

This way of learning is fun because the teacher speaks about easy things that I can participate in.

She gives homework that encourages me to take self responsibility and let’s me learn at my own pace.

Kadija Bridgewater

Parent of 3

My favorite part has been that the classes have just my kids, so they get personal teaching attention.

HSA offers great personalized attention for your kids to learn Spanish quicker. Also, the teachers are friendly and patient.

Jude O’Sullivan

Taking Spanish for personal purposes

The comprehensive curriculum means that you learn all of the grammar you need in a structured way, and as the classes progress you also learn plenty of vocabulary and expressions.

Some teachers are more experienced and skilled than others, but they’re all very friendly and helpful.

You can also check some fantastic reviews bloggers have written on their websites. Just like Joanie did on her website Simple Living Mama, the one from Only Passionate Curiosity, and also Spanish with Tati.

Importance of Foreign Languages in School Curriculum

Learning a foreign language will reinforce the knowledge and skills that students develop when learning their native language, English. Especially the skills to communicate with their peers, such as speaking and listening.

Furthermore, it helps to combine all these knowledge and skills to understand better the new language, its grammar, sentence construction, and the meaning of words.

Students’ involvement with the new language’s culture can help them gain knowledge that will give them a global vision.

Students will have better interactions in the social sphere because when studying a foreign language, they will communicate effortlessly with people of different origins.

And what about the benefits for their professional future?

Learning a foreign language at school will give them the foundation so that they can prosper in their futures as working professionals.

Knowing a second language will help them when they enter the workforce as they will stand out from competitors in any position they apply for.

Intercultural empathy is usually found in bilingual people.

Therefore, when applying for jobs abroad, you will have a great professional advantage and will move to another country more easily.

This is why it is important not to leave foreign languages aside in your school’s curriculum, especially if you’re a teacher planning for an upcoming class or semester.

Benefits of Learning Spanish for Students

Whether you’re in charge of a public or private school, it’s crucial to consider all the benefits of teaching Spanish to your students.

The main ones are the following:

1. Cognitive Development

Bilingual or foreign language education has cognitive benefits.

Students learning a second language are better at performing tasks that include creative thinking, problem-solving, and pattern recognition.

If your students are young, they will develop linguistic awareness and gain a more complex level of understanding of their native language, helping them to perfect their English while learning Spanish.

2. Academic Achievement

The brain of students who learn Spanish improves as it receives new challenges to recognize the language, make sense of it, and communicate.

Students who learn Spanish at school earn higher math, reading, and vocabulary achievements than their peers who only speak one language.

3. Improved Memory

Children who learn Spanish and are bilingual have better memories and are more cognitively creative than monolinguals.

Bilingual people usually remember names, addresses, phone numbers, and objects better than those who speak only one language.

Even adults who speak two languages or more develop dementia symptoms five years later than those who only speak their mother tongue.

4. Economic opportunities

In a world where job opportunities are becoming scarce, it is increasingly necessary to learn a second language to expand our opportunities.

Additionally, the need for multilingual staff for key positions in business has become more critical.

That is why it is crucial that you teach Spanish to your students so they have access to a better salary and better positions than those who only speak one language.

And if they learn to speak Spanish fluently, they can communicate with one of the largest communities worldwide and in the United States.

Keep in mind that more than 560 million speak it around the world, and the U.S. has the 2nd largest population of Spanish speakers in the world.

Imagine the possibilities!

5. Cultural Appreciation

Constant exposure to Spanish will help students develop empathy and appreciation for a new culture and the differences it may have from their own.

Kids can interact with the culture and learn the language through its stories, music, idioms, etc. since they don’t need a literal translation to understand the message.

Talking in an outgoing way with people who speak Spanish and have other customs will make them perform better at school, at home, and in the future at their jobs.

Requirements to Create a Spanish Program in Your School

We know that the urgency of teaching Spanish in schools is getting bigger, and along with that, education budgets have suffered cuts that make other expenses being prioritized.

In this scenario, the Spanish tutor for schools teaches the basics, and students manage to memorize only simple vocabulary that will not help them communicate effectively.

To all of the above, we add that the United States is experiencing a nationwide shortage of bilingual teachers, which impacts students’ future and their learning of a second language.

That is why it is crucial that you prioritize an excellent Spanish teaching program in your school. It plays an essential role in the present and future of students and the country’s economy.

We know that the time and logistics of creating, selecting, organizing, implementing, and paying for a Spanish program for your students can be complicated.

This is how group classes through an external company can be the best decision to maintain the teaching of Spanish in your school.

The Importance of Accredited Homeschooling Programs

Homeschooling is becoming more and more popular.

In the 2020-2021 school year, around 3 million school-age students in the US were home-schooled.

Homeschooling usually happens at home and under parental supervision, and in some cases, with the help of tutors.

This allows parents to control what their children learn, the curriculum, and the methodology, and they can even adjust the pace.

But why is it so important that the homeschooling program you choose has been accredited or endorsed by an educational institution?

First, the accreditation process will ensure that the program you choose is governed by the educational standard of the country where you live in.

Second, it will ensure that your children will not have any issues when they go to college or enter the workforce.

In other words, accredited homeschooling programs are more trustworthy than unaccredited ones. So, keep an eye on that.

Also, accredited programs must keep up with national or international standards. It’s not like they earned the accreditation, and that’s it. They must keep up the good work.

They have to ensure that the quality of content and methodology are held to the highest standards to give a fulfilling experience to their children.

So, accredited homeschooling programs equal success!

When you choose an accredited homeschooling program, you ensure you have all the courses your high school student needs to get into college.

In addition, by having the accreditation, you make sure your children will study as if they were in a public or a private school but with all the benefits of homeschooling.

Ideally, you should find programs that have partnered with schools that have already completed the process and obtained homeschool accreditation.

Top 5 Accredited Homeschooling Programs

We know that the options are endless.

So, in this list, you’ll find some programs to look into if you want your children to study at home.

We selected each program based on its interactivity, usability, cost, and uniqueness.

You’ll also find a direct link to their website. So, we recommend looking into it and even talking to an advisor.

Let’s begin!

K12

This program is one of the people’s favorites since you can easily customize the courses according to your children’s age.

K12 offers classes for kids of all ages. From K to 12th grade, every grade provides an approach explicitly made for each age group.

For grades K through 8th, they offer independent homeschooling or teacher-led learning. From 9th to 12th grade, they only provide teacher-led learning.

The teacher-led program is very similar to that of a private online school, and the level of customization is so great that it’s worth the investment.

You can choose to enroll your children in the complete program or just some of the classes that interest you the most. Maybe your kids need extra credits. Then this is the place for you.

With K12, you can access personalized learning, state-certified teachers, engaging and interactive lessons, online and in-person sessions and activities, and a supportive school community.

K12’s core subjects are Math, Language Arts, Science, History, World Languages, Art, and Music.

As part of the methodology, children can learn through an online platform designed to deliver engaging lessons, support students, and keep everything organized for parents.

They offer tools to develop all necessary skills from home.

Alzahraa, a former K12 student, says:

“I realized that I had opportunities and knew things that my fellow brick-and-mortar friends didn’t. Such as career-related classes that were provided and being able to build a close relationship with my teachers and counselor despite it being online.”

Robert S., a parent, says:

“The curriculum is great… It’s not just textbook stuff. It’s stuff you deal with every day in the real world, people you meet.”

Oak Meadow

This homeschooling program is one of the few that offers a secular curriculum.

Oak Meadow is based on the Waldorf philosophy, which seeks to instill in students a sense of wonder and respect for creation without religious beliefs.

This program is focused on creativity and hands-on, rigorous work. They also do work based on nature, which puts a unique spin on a kid’s learning experience.

Your children will participate in learning experiences that combine core knowledge, creative problem-solving, and artistic skills.

They’ll also learn to develop their communication skills, sense of empathy, social responsibility, and Earth stewardship.

Oak Meadow provides a well-rounded education with rigorous academic standards and a student-centered education.

Amazing!

With Oak Meadow, your children will develop and strengthen their core abilities. They will also be free to show they’ve acquired new skills in various ways.

Oak Meadow parents say:

“I homeschooled my two daughters using Oak Meadow. One has completed her master’s degree in architecture. The creativity she developed while using Oak Meadow sparked inspiration that she carries to this day.”

“The emotional connection to Oak Meadow for our son has been amazing to witness. We have tried other curricula, but we just keep coming back to Oak Meadow. I like that it’s gentle and is a starting point for more learning to happen naturally. We usually finish the weekly lesson early and then move on to whatever my son wants to do, experience, or learn!”

Khan Academy

This homeschooling platform stands out for two great features: it’s completely free, and it offers a wide variety of subjects to study.

Khan Academy has won awards because of the work they do on bringing education to kids around the world for free. And they can do so because they’re a non-profit organization.

Over the years, they have focused on expanding the resources available. For example, kids can have all they need to study for their SATs for free.

If you decide to join Khan Academy, your kids must take a test to determine what they need and where they should be placed.

They mainly use video lessons that are easy to understand and follow.

With the quizzes and unit tests they take, you can keep track of your child’s progress.

From Math, Language, Art, computer lessons, and life skills, your children will no doubt become efficient and creative adults.

They also offer classes that you won’t find in other homeschooling programs, such as computer programming, animation, entrepreneurship, and more.

This makes Khan Academy one of the best online homeschooling programs.

Parikshit, a student from India, says:

“I first started practicing at Khan Academy when I was preparing for my PSAT. I thought Khan Academy was only for SAT prep. Later I found it was much more than that. I am studying every day from Khan Academy on many topics!”

Amy, a homeschooling mother, says:

“I’m homeschooling three of my children now in grades 4, 6, and 11. Because I have so many different grade levels, it can be difficult to explain each lesson to each child. One of my children has autism, so he struggles more with focusing on my lectures. This site is perfect for classrooms at school sites and at home! Not only that, I recommend it to parents that have trouble helping their children with their homework.”

CK-12 Foundation

This program’s main characteristic is its strength in STEM courses available for children of all ages.

The CK-12 platform will help your kids master Math, Science, Technology, etc., through interactive activities and games.

This free program is considered one of the most advanced homeschooling programs.

It offers countless resources and a cutting-edge technological educational approach, currently in all STEM classes.

Don’t worry. They also have other classes like writing, social studies, spelling, and language.

Are you worried your kids are not ready for STEM subjects? Don’t worry. CK-12 offers simulations, animations, and games to prepare your children for taking on this new challenge!

They’ll be able to use Flex Books, which are interactive digital textbooks that allow students to learn while they play.

Pretty fun, right?

To help parents, CK-12 lets them track their children’s progress online.

This way, parents or tutors know which areas their children need a bit of help or a new challenge!

Deedee wrote this about her children’s experience:

“As a homeschooling mom, it’s always a struggle to find comprehensive material that is logical and easy to understand. That is not guaranteed even when money is spent. This is science-based with great links and supportive data.”

Richard G, a teacher, says:

“Helped my secondary students tremendously by allowing them to access supplemental materials that assist in their learning and more importantly, giving access to their creativity. They can now look up reliable material that interests them in their search for knowledge of how life is and works and how they want it to become.”

Calvert

Talking about veterans in online education!

With 110 years of trajectory, Calvert resembles the most to traditional objective-based learning at home education.

Each lesson begins with a goal. Children in class will learn something new, and at the end, they must take a short quiz to see if they’ve retained the information.

Online classes, videos, and interactive activities are all available for kids grades 3rd through 12th

Parents have access to the curriculum so they can prepare at home faster.

Calvert’s curriculum aims to spark your children’s curiosity and encourage them to use their strengths and develop new interests.

Here’s what parents who use Calvert say about it:

Johanny T says:

“This is our 3rd year with Calvert, and we are loving the new curriculum. The first few days were a little challenging while we adjusted to the new format but both my girls find the new curriculum more engaging and interesting.”

Lisa T says:

“I purchased Calvert because I wanted a fairly independent learning program my 13-year-old daughter could do. With this program, she can remain consistent with her education, and she is enjoying it.” Lisa T.

HSA: Effective, Efficient, and Customized Spanish Learning

Homeschool Spanish Academy is a unique school that connects students with certified Spanish instructors from Guatemala through the Internet.

We give high-quality education to children, young adults, and adults who want to learn Spanish.

Our teachers are constantly training to provide an unparalleled experience and an expert-certified curriculum.

At HSA, we offer certified Spanish classes, courses, programs, and accompaniment all year round. We even have a summer school program.

Students will be able to interact with native Guatemalan teachers and learn about their culture, traditions, and much more from the comfort of their homes.

Our classes are planned according to your children’s abilities for a more personalized experience. So, whether they’re starting out or are seasoned veterans looking for a fresh up, we got it all for them!

What Does Homeschool Spanish Academy Offer?

You will find programs for all ages in the services we offer.

For children from 5 to 6 years old, we have a Preschool program with approximately 25 minutes long classes.

In this program, your children will be able to build a solid base of the Spanish language and learn pronunciation and tons of new words and phrases that will help them carry out basic conversations.

They can also identify colors, objects, numbers, and images.

For 6- to 10-year-olds, we offer the Elementary Program, with classes that are also 25 minutes long.

In this stage, teachers will develop their students’ skills to have more confidence to speak in Spanish with a native speaker.

The goal is for them to become familiar with the language so they’ll enjoy reading, writing, speaking, and having it as part of their everyday life.

© Homeschool Spanish Academy

For middle school kids, we offer classes that are 50 minutes long, and they’ll gradually learn to form sentences using all tenses.

Their vocabulary will continue to expand, and it’s at this stage teachers will encourage them to apply what they have learned in conversations during each session.

In our Middle School program, students can start getting their foreign language credit and have it count for high school.

Now, for 13- to 18-year-olds, we have the High School program with 50-minute classes.

Our course for this stage is designed to be more rigorous than any public high school Spanish curriculum, so be ready to be challenged!

Students are taught to apply their knowledge of the Spanish language through conversations with their native teachers and based on everyday life situations.

The High School program is designed to meet the foreign language requirement for college admissions. In addition, it prepares students to speak Spanish fluently as a second language.

We also have programs available for adults and programs for schools with either private, hybrid, public, or online classes.

What Does Each Spanish Class Include at HSA?

With each of our classes, students will learn key concepts about the Spanish language. Additionally, teachers always provide feedback and support material to help students improve.

They will also gain new skills through multimedia lessons where they can work on their vocabulary, speaking, listening, grammar, reading, and writing skills. All of this with the help of the Best Spanish Curriculum out there.

HSA Students can download and submit assignments online.

Assignments are graded upon completion, and they’re reviewed and corrected. Plus, assignments are often discussed in the next class.

This way, feedback will be received in real-time to help strengthen and reinforce knowledge in class.

In addition, students can take quizzes and exams during classes. Most of these tests include reading, writing, and speaking exercises.

Everything is tailored to each student’s level and learning needs, regardless of age.

Read some of the Homeschool Spanish Academy reviews our students have shared with us so that you can see first-hand what the experience at HSA is like.

Preschool Students

Alexandra Di Martino – Parent of two kids

Our favorite part of the HSA classes is the teacher and the structured curriculum.

Convenient, well structured, good customer service, excellent teacher that brings out the best in my young boys’ perfect length classes for them.

Both of my boys are starting to use Spanish spontaneously at home, which is amazing because my husband’s family is from Argentina. It’s been a great way for the boys to connect with their culture.

Eden Hutchins – Parent of one kid

Our instructors, Heidi & Ada have been so upbeat and fun. It has been fun to watch my daughter connect with them and get excited about what she’s learning.

I would say it is a very innovative program that allows you to converse with a native Spanish speaker while sitting at home.

The additional resources available are very well-done. It is clearly a well-run program that is an amazing bargain for what you actually get!

We spoke to some Spanish speakers working in our neighborhood last week. My daughter loved using her Spanish greetings.

Elementary students

Brooke Edwards – Parent of three kids

HSA exceeds all of our expectations! Your relational teaching approach makes learning fun. My son looks forward to each class and even enjoys doing his Spanish homework. We’re so glad we found HSA!

You’ve got to try HSA! My son is learning Spanish at a rapid pace and it’s all because his teachers make learning Spanish relational and fun!

He’s become very interested in Guatemala and its people.

Alexey Brevnoff – Parent of one kid

My son has been able to understand and speak in complete sentences with different teachers since he started his classes.

Today his teacher Fernanda gave him a test and he responded well, he is able to understand what she says and speak to her.

Middle School Students

Felicia Lospaluto- Parent of three kids

Friendly and skilled instructors, flexible dates and times, my kids are learning Spanish.

They practice without realizing it, just by speaking Spanish to each other for fun. They also recognize words and phrases when hearing native Spanish speakers outside of the home.

Stephanie Olnes – Parent of one kid

HSA has been a good source for enhancing our homeschool experience with experienced Spanish speaking instructors on our time and that the convenience of scheduling and attending classes online is easy.

We spent six weeks in Nicaragua last summer and having our daughter along to help translate and speak was a huge plus!

High School Students

Nadine Lauffer

I love being able to speak to real Spanish speakers, I like the one-on-one classes and ask questions.

HSA is a great way to meet high school Spanish requirements on a tight schedule because you are able to choose times that work for you. You also are able to speak an interact with native Spanish teachers!

I enjoy talking to my friends in Spanish!

Saara Kanervikkoaho – Parent of three kids

Elie (15 years old) takes lessons to become more fluent and to reinforce what he’s learning in brick-and-mortar high school. The teachers are excellent in their work with each student. They’re very patient, encouraging and explain things well.

We attempt to speak Spanish in the house. Both boys are becoming able to read instructions for model sets, games, etc., when written information is given in Spanish.

Adult Students

Leah Goldstein

I like learning while being in conversation with my teachers- practicing how to apply what I’ve learned.

I live in New Mexico, so I often meet people who speak Spanish. I am also applying for a job and being closer to bilingual will be helpful for me.

Nathanael Visser

I like being able to understand a different language and being able to speak a different language, I never thought I would be able to do this.

The teachers are awesome. They really have a passion for teaching and desire for you to learn to speak Spanish.

I speak Spanish almost every day at my job in construction in the United States.

We know that you might wonder when children can learn a new language.

Well, according to research, any time before the age of 10 is optimal. But, remember, it’s never too late.

Also, language learning has a great impact on their brains. That’s another great reason to sign them up for Spanish lessons.

Hundreds, perhaps thousands of online academies, platforms, and apps offer their students different kinds of processes. Group or individual classes, online or face-to-face classes, textbooks, apps, native teachers…

The opportunities are endless! And we know people can get easily overwhelmed.

So, to help you out, here are two great online academies: Homeschool Spanish Academy and LingoKids. In this article you’ll find some of the pros and cons of each, to help you decide which one best suits your needs.

A bit of a disclaimer: your kids won’t be able to learn Spanish with LingoKids since they only focus on the English language. However, you can still use it to improve your English skills.

Spanish Classes for Kids: What’s Best Live Classes or Software/App?

Technology and the way our children learn have evolved in recent years.

Now we have so much diversity available so kids can continue learning from home. Or anywhere, really!

Maybe you prefer a physical classroom, where your children can interact with their teachers and classmates.

However, online classes have lots of benefits such as flexibility, online learners usually have a higher retention rate, and students can have access to personalized classes.

You can also consider paying for apps or computer programs. Your kids can find interactive and game-based lessons in them, and yes, they can be highly addictive, which, in this case, is a good thing!

Some of these apps include 5-minute lessons.

Of course, the lack of interaction means that learning is not as meaningful as it would be in a physical space.

But let’s move on. Here’s a quick look at Homeschool Spanish Academy vs LingoKids. Both are great but far different from each other.

Homeschool Spanish Academy (HSA)

This academy has more than 50 native Spanish-speaking teachers ready to give students an authentic learning experience.

All of its teachers are Guatemalan and certified to teach Spanish as a second language.

With more than 10 years of experience, HSA aims to improve people’s fluency with classes made to fit the pace and needs of each one of its students.

In the classes, students will get key concepts of the Spanish language to improve their understanding.

Apart from providing the lessons, teachers will review the assignments, correct them, and

provide support in areas where reinforcement is needed.

Your kids will have access to a teaching program to learn and improve their speaking,

listening, grammar, reading, and writing skills.

In addition, during the lesson, your children can apply what they have learned in real time with their teachers and classmates and receive feedback to transition into the next lesson easily.

Parents can also access the platform mentioned above to review the report cards at any time

and help their children at home.

HSA has programs available for all ages, from preschool to adults, and has plenty of partnerships to benefit groups of students.

Lastly, HSA’s academic programs are accredited by various organizations and commissions for K–12 students.

We’ve worked hard to provide only the best!

LingoKids

LingoKids is a Playlearning™ app created for children between the ages of 2 and 8, and with it, they can learn academic content in English. In the app, they can also find games and colorful characters that will help them develop important life skills.

The LingoKids App was created in 2015, filled with original content created by Oxford University Press.

With its unique way of teaching English, this app helps kids learn vocabulary, practice phonics, create sentences, learn about STEM concepts, and much more.

Again, the focus is on the English language.

Kids who use LingoKids can also develop skills like creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking, and improve their communication skills too.

Unlike apps like Duolingo, LingoKids is 100% ad-free.

Using this app, kids can learn over 3,000 words in English and complete over 1,000 educational activities that include games, songs, and videos.

Additionally, as part of the app’s introduction, users can access 60 basic topics that serve introductory lessons for the English language.

Do you remember we said that LingoKids was made by experts from the Oxford University Press? Well, this has not changed.

Even today, experts in child psychology, literacy teaching, vocabulary development, and educational technology, among others, continue to improve the app.

If your kids need a boost in their English skills, this is the app for you!

Do you want your children to learn Spanish?

We know you’ve already invested time looking for the benefits of learning a new language and why Spanish is the best decision.

But we also know that it can be overwhelming to find the academy.

Many offer various classes and use modern methods and approaches, like group or individual classes, online or face-to-face classes, online platforms, textbooks, native teachers, etc.

To help you in this decision, we have compared two of the greatest Spanish academies out there: Homeschool Spanish Academy vs The Cultured Kid, so you can decide which one suits your needs.

Live Classes or Pre-Recorded Materials? What Is Best?

Technology and the way our children learn have evolved in recent years. Now have lots of tools available for kids to continue learning from home.

We have learned that no matter the place, time, what type of device we use, or what country live in, our kids can have access to education.

Now that’s a win-win for all!

You may prefer to sign children to online classes so that they can interact with native Spanish-speaking teachers and students from other countries from the comfort of their own homes.

No doubt that this will enrich their learning experience.

Online classes have many advantages, such as flexibility, a higher retention rate compared to face-to-face classes, and the fact that teachers can personalize the lesson according to each student’s progress.

You can also consider paying for apps or platforms where classes and activities are pre-recorded, so your kids just have to follow instructions, watch the videos, and fill in their exercises.

Sounds easy, huh?

In a study by the Australian Catholic University, students who watched pre-recorded videos absorbed the information “better” than those who attended face-to-face classes.

The study also showed that pre-recorded classes helped students be more autonomous and avoid feeling overwhelmed, as they can pause and watch the lessons over and over again. In other words: they learn at their own pace.

There are more benefits to the two learning methods that Homeschool Spanish Academy vs The Culture Kid use.

But let us discover more about these two schools.

Homeschool Spanish Academy

This academy has more than 50 native Spanish-speaking teachers ready to give students an authentic learning experience.

All of its teachers are Guatemalan and certified to teach Spanish as a second language.

With more than 10 years of experience, HSA aims to improve people’s fluency with classes made to fit the pace and needs of each one of its students.

In addition, during the lesson, your children can apply what they have learned in real time with their teachers and classmates and receive feedback to transition into the next lesson easily.

Parents can also access the platform mentioned above to review the report cards at any time and help their children at home.

HSA has programs available for all ages, from preschool to adults, and has plenty of partnerships to benefit groups of students.

Lastly, HSA’s academic programs are accredited by various organizations and commissions for K–12 students.

We’ve worked hard to provide only the best!

The Cultured Kid

The Cultured Kid platform is specifically designed to teach Spanish —and other languages— to children from 2 to 8 years old.

They have also created up to two years’ worth of weekly language lessons.

Impressive!

They use a method called “The Fast Track to Fluency™ Framework.”

This method has three phases.

The first is “Interest,” where they teach a lesson with the help of music-based animated videos, so students can learn new information while having fun.

The second phase is called “Exposure.”

In it, lessons are presented so that the youngest students can learn without having to complete elaborate or hard exercises.

Instead, they do simple reading exercises, they write, follow visual or auditory lessons, or do kinesthetic learning exercises.

Finally, the third moment is called “Relationship.”

In the Culture Kid’s “Relationship” phase, you’re your kid’s role model, and you will guide them as they progress through the lessons.

This is great for parents who like getting involved in their children’s education!

Families who purchase a plan with The Cultured Kid can access immersive videos, flashcards, activity sheets, lesson plans, and more!

Additionally, if you didn’t like the experience, the 7-day trial is fully refundable.

But that’s not all! The Cultured Kid team uploads new and updated content to their platform each month so parents can use them during the “Relationship” phase and beyond!

Homeschool Spanish Academy vs The Cultured Kid

Homeschool Spanish Academy (HSA) has recently obtained ACS WASC accreditation for our Spanish language program, making us one of the few online language schools to achieve this prestigious form of accreditation.

To be clear, we have been offering credit to our high school students for years through our third-party partnership with NARHS. But we wanted a more direct, faster, and cheaper solution for our students—and thanks to recent updates in ACS WASC’s accreditation offerings, we suddenly became eligible (learn more about that here).

But what does this mean for you and your K-12 student? In this article, we’ll explore the benefits of Homeschool Spanish Academy’s ACS WASC accreditation and how it can help your student develop strong language skills, cultural awareness, and gain a competitive advantage in their studies.

Homeschool Spanish Academy Is Trusted By:

What Is ACS WASC Accreditation, and Why Is It Important?

First, let’s define what ACS WASC accreditation is and why it matters.

The Accrediting Commission for Schools, Western Association of Schools and Colleges (ACS WASC), is a highly respected accreditation agency for K–12 schools and educational institutions. This globally recognized accrediting agency evaluates schools and educational programs in the United States to ensure that they meet high levels of quality and effectiveness.

Accreditation from ACS WASC is known for its strict requirements and thorough evaluation process, which includes a thorough look at a school’s academic programs, administrative practices, and overall effectiveness.

For online language schools like Homeschool Spanish Academy, obtaining ACS WASC accreditation demonstrates our commitment to providing high-quality Spanish language instruction to K-12 students. It also assures parents that our program meets high standards of quality and effectiveness.

Truly, our accredited online Spanish classes are one of a kind!

HSA is now ACS WASC Accredited

How HSA Became Eligible for ACS WASC Accreditation

Previously, ACS WASC only gave accreditation to full diploma-granting schools. Meanwhile, HSA was committed to providing high school credits to our students, so we partnered with North Atlantic Regional High School (NARSH) to provide third-party accreditation. But because this was a deal with a third party, it had some problems, like being slower, more expensive, and requiring more paperwork.

Fortunately, ACS WASC recently began giving accreditation to supplementary education programs, allowing HSA to apply for certification directly with their agency. This was a big deal for us because it meant we could finally get formal accreditation on our own!

What Exactly Is a Supplementary Education Program?

A supplementary education program, according to ACS WASC, is an educational program or course that gives students additional learning opportunities outside of their regular school programs. These programs, which might include after-school programs, summer school programs, tutoring services, and online courses, are frequently provided by institutions or specialized groups.

Our students can now take advantage of HSA’s accredited status while remaining assured of our high quality and strict standards.

7 Benefits of HSA’s ACS WASC Accreditation

So, what are the major benefits you can expect from Homeschool Spanish Academy’s ACS WASC accreditation for your K-12 student?

Here are just a few:

1. High-Quality Curriculum Aligned With State and National Standards

One of the most significant benefits of Homeschool Spanish Academy’s ACS WASC accreditation is that we follow a high-quality curriculum that aligns with state and national standards in the United States for language learning.

This means that our Spanish classes are designed to provide K-12 students with a solid foundation in the Spanish language and culture, which can prepare them for further language studies and the practical application of their skills.

Our curriculum includes not only engaging live instruction but also a variety of interactive materials, such as videos, games, and audio.

We also provide assessments and feedback to help your K-12 student track their progress and stay motivated in their language learning journey.

2. Experienced and Certified Spanish Instructors

To meet the standards of ACS WASC accreditation, Homeschool Spanish Academy must employ highly skilled and experienced Spanish instructors who are knowledgeable about best practices in language instruction.

This means that K-12 students who take our accredited online Spanish classes can benefit from the expertise of seasoned instructors who can guide them in their language learning journey.

Our Spanish instructors are native Spanish speakers with years of experience teaching Spanish to K–12 students of all ages and proficiency levels.

They use various teaching methods and techniques to accommodate different learning styles. Additionally, they provide personalized instruction and feedback to help each student achieve their language learning goals.

3. Ongoing Assessment and Improvement

To maintain ACS WASC accreditation, Homeschool Spanish Academy must engage in ongoing assessment and improvement of its Spanish language program. This means that we are constantly evaluating our program, making improvements as needed, and ensuring that our program meets the evolving needs of K-12 students.

This focus on continuous improvement can help ensure that K-12 students receive the best possible language instruction in every program we offer.

4. Recognition by Universities and Colleges

ACS WASC accreditation is recognized by universities and colleges throughout the United States, which means that K-12 students who complete our accredited online Spanish classes may have an advantage when applying to colleges and universities.

Our accreditation status demonstrates that we meet high standards of quality and effectiveness, which can assure colleges and universities that our K-12 students have received a rigorous and comprehensive education in Spanish language and culture.

5. Preparation for Advanced Spanish Language Learning

K-12 students who take our accredited Spanish classes can also benefit from the preparation for advanced Spanish language learning.

Our curriculum is meant to give students a strong foundation in Spanish grammar, vocabulary, and culture. This can help them get ready for more advanced language classes in high school and college.

In addition, our Spanish classes are taught in a conversational style, which can help students develop the oral communication skills needed to communicate effectively in Spanish.

This can be especially important for students who plan to study abroad, work in international settings, or pursue careers in fields that require proficiency in Spanish.

6. Cultural Awareness and Understanding

Another benefit of Homeschool Spanish Academy’s ACS WASC accreditation is the emphasis on cultural awareness, understanding, and connection. We even encourage our students to use their Spanish skills with local native speakers, regardless of where they live!

Some of the cultural resources we use in our Spanish classes are videos, audio recordings, and readings. These help students learn about the different cultures and traditions of Spanish-speaking countries.

In addition, our instructors are knowledgeable about cultural differences and can help students develop cross-cultural communication skills essential in today’s globalized world.

By learning about and appreciating different cultures, K-12 students can become more open-minded, empathetic, and culturally aware individuals.

“This is the best way for your kid to learn Spanish. It’s one-on-one, taught by native Spanish speakers, and uses a curriculum.”

– Sharon K, Parent of 3

Cindy D, Parent of 3

“It’s a great way to learn Spanish, from native Spanish speakers in a 1-on-1 environment. It’s been fairly easy to schedule classes around my daughter’s other classes. The best value for us has been ordering multiple classes at a time. All the instructors have been great!”

– Cindy D, Parent of 3

Erica P. Parent of 1

“HSA offers very affordable, quality, one on one classes with a native speaker. My son has greatly benefited from taking classes. We have seen his confidence increase as well as his pronunciation improve, because he learns from a native Spanish speaker. HSA has quick, personal customer service. Our family has been very pleased with our experience so far!”
