The Importance of Effective Communication in the Workplace

Effective workplace communication is crucial as many different things depend on it.

From boosting “employee morale, engagement, productivity, and satisfaction” to driving “better results for individuals, teams, and organizations.”

According to Expert Market, 28% of employees “listed poor communication as the reason why they weren’t able to finish projects on time.”

Last but not least, indeed mentions that effective communication in the workplace improves productivity, innovation, and public impression.

Impressive, right?

What Happens When You Have Spanish-Speaking Co-Workers?

Now let’s talk about what happens when one or a few of your co-workers speak Spanish, a language spoken (as their first language) by 42 million people.

One option is, of course, to demand that your co-workers learn to speak English. However, that’s short-sighted, and in the real world, you need to look for solutions instead of making excuses.

Besides, if you’re responsible for improving your company’s productivity, you may be well-served to learn some Spanish yourself. At least for self-preservation.

With that in mind, we have compiled a series of Spanish-learning lessons for the workplace, including posts for accountants, police officers, and criminal justice professionals.

Architect: If you look at the cross-section view, you’ll find out where the kitchen is located.

Worker: But I haven’t got the cross-section view yet!
Architect: No way. I’ll get it for you right now!
Worker: Also, get me the S sheets; they were missing from my blueprint.

Architect: Sure, I’ll talk about this with the engineer and get you a complete version of the blueprint.

Worker: Thank you very much!

—

Arquitecto: Si le echas un vistazo a la vista transversal, encontrarás dónde se encuentra la cocina.

Trabajador: ¡Pero no he recibido la vista transversal aún!

Trabajador: ¡Muchas gracias!

Scenario 2

Worker: What does this symbol mean?

Architect: That’s a transformer. You can look for the meaning of all symbols in the legend.
Worker: Got it. Another thing, what’s the ASF for this project?
Architect: The assignable square footage for this project is 900.

Worker: Perfect! This information gives me a better idea of the dimension of the construction site.

Architect: Great! Let’s get to work!

Trabajador: ¿Qué significa este símbolo?

Arquitecto: Eso es un transformador. Puedes buscar el significado de todos los símbolos en la leyenda.
