Types of Toys: Vocabulary (Free Spanish Lessons for Kids)

Los juguetes, or toys, are kid-focused objects used to entertain and even educate. It’s through toys that children explore, discover, learn, and interact in situations that teach them problem-solving skills and strengthen their development. What’s more, playing with toys improves fine and gross motor skills, promotes visualizing objectives, and turns your child into a self-directed explorer.

Children have the ability to relate to toys both as objects and means of playing, which encourage expressions and representation of different aspects of their reality. In other words, toys put kids in contact with both human-made and natural reproductions of the world around them.

Juguetes Para Bebes (Baby Toys)

Los juguetes de bebés are those toys considered for kids for ages 0 to 3. Toys for babies are usually brightly colored, easy to observe and follow with the eyes, not heavy, not too hard, easy to move around, and safe to put in the mouth to bite and suck because babies put everything in their mouth!

Baby toys have to be safe for them to play with, and if you want to learn how to talk about them, let’s check out the next list!

Now, if you think baby toys are not for you, let’s talk about other kinds of toys in Spanish.

Juguetes para niños (Toys for Tots)

At this age, the list of toys is huge! Kids learn to play with almost everything and usually, they begin to express their preferences and interests during this time of their life.

These toys are made for kids ages 3 to 12. At this age, kids have a larger attention span, their motor dexterity is better, they like the social game— after 3 years it is the perfect age to learn about turns and being patient— which benefits the development of the kids and teaches them to not be selfish or egocentric.

For this age, toys that talk are really popular, so are las muñecas, or dolls in Spanish, and las figuras de acción, or action figures. Toys that sing, especially those that resemble popular movies or TV characters are also very popular!

And last, but not least, at this age, technological toys are really popular and useful. Toy computers or tablets like those from Leapfrog or Vtech toys are a great way to introduce kids to technology without exposing them to the internet or risking expensive technology being broken.

Let’s learn about all the kinds of toys you can play with in Spanish!
